Add-ons and accessories
6 min read
There is no "add-ons" page. That is the single reason this is hard to find: an add-on is just another product, created on the same Products page as everything else, with its Select product type set to Rental Accessory.
Helmets, dry bags, child seats, delivery, a picnic basket — all of them are Rental Accessory products.
Create an accessory
- Open Products and select the location in the navigation bar.
- Press Add new product.
- Set Select product type to Rental Accessory. This cannot be changed after the first save, so get it right now — an accessory saved as a Rental Product has to be recreated.
- Fill in Art. No, Short name and Sort Order in booking view (lowest number has the highest priority).
- Fill in the Product name (English required) and Description in the Product Names & Descriptions card, in each language your booking page offers.
- Upload a Product Image.
- Set Number of units — how many you actually have. 0 units means never bookable.
- Set the price and pick at least one entry under Taxes.
- Press Save.
Accessories exist per location, like every other product. Use Copy to put the same accessory on your other locations rather than retyping it.
How the price works
The accessory Pricing card is deliberately small. Same price for high and low season is ticked by default, and you get one field, Price per unit.
Under it sits the sentence that explains the whole pricing model:
"Prices are set as full day price."
So the number you type is a price per day, not a price for the booking. A 60-kr helmet on a three-day kayak rental costs the customer 180 kr.
More precisely, the charge is your day price multiplied by the number of started days:
| Rental length | Days charged |
|---|---|
| 2 hours | 1 |
| 20 hours | 1 |
| 24 hours | 1 |
| 25 hours | 2 |
| 3 days | 3 |
| 3 days 1 hour | 4 |
There is no hourly price and no tier table for accessories — the hour and day tiers you may know from rental products do not exist here. If you want a genuinely one-off fee that does not grow with the rental length, an accessory cannot do it; use an Insurance product instead (see Making a charge mandatory or one-off below).
Untick Same price for high and low season and you get High Season and Low Season tabs with a price each. Which one applies is decided by the opening period the booking falls in, set on the location's Open dates tab — not on the product.
Both prices must be filled in and greater than zero, otherwise saving gives "Please set high and low season prices for your product".
Attach an accessory to a rental product
- Open the rental product — not the accessory.
- In the Product Details card, open Related Accessories.
- Tick the accessories that belong with it. Only accessories from the same location are listed.
- Press Save.
The list is a multi-select; the chosen accessories show as chips. Repeat on each rental product that should offer them — the link lives on the rental product, so an accessory can belong to several products.
What the customer sees
Accessories and insurance appear on their own step of the booking flow, labelled Addons in the stepper, reached with the Go to Addons button after the customer has chosen their rental products and dates.
That step has two parts, and it is worth knowing both:
- Grouped under each rental product in the basket. For every product in the basket that has Related Accessories, the accessories you linked are listed under that product's name. These only appear once the product is actually in the basket.
- A general Accessories list. Below that, every accessory at the location is listed under the heading Accessories, whether or not it is linked to anything. So an accessory you never attach to a product is still sold — the Related Accessories link controls the grouping and the prominence, not whether the accessory is offered.
Each accessory is a card with your image, name, description and price, a quantity selector limited by your stock, and a Book button. Sold-out accessories show Fully booked. Customers can change the quantity again in the basket, or remove the line entirely.
The Addons step is only shown at all if the location has at least one accessory or one optional insurance. With none, the customer goes straight from products to the basket.
Making a charge mandatory or one-off
Accessories cannot be made mandatory. There is no "required" or "included" setting on a Rental Accessory, and nothing in the booking flow forces one into the basket. If you have been looking for that switch, it is not hidden — it does not exist for accessories.
What does exist is on the Insurance product type, and it is the supported way to add a compulsory charge:
- Create a product with Select product type set to Insurance.
- Give it the name the customer should see on their receipt — it will read exactly as you type it, so "Cleaning fee" or "Damage waiver" rather than "Insurance", if that is what it is.
- Set the price and the Taxes.
- Choose How booking length affects insurance price:
- Price applies per booking day — grows with the rental, like an accessory.
- Same price no matter how many days — a true one-off fee for the whole booking. This is the setting people ask for when they say "a fixed fee, not per day".
- Choose How booking items affect insurance price:
- Price applies for each item in the booking* — multiplied by the number of rented items. Accessories do not count towards this.
- Same price no matter how many items — charged once regardless.
- Tick Forcing fee. The tooltip states it plainly: "When this is on, customers can't remove this insurance from the booking—it's always included."
- Press Save.
A Forcing fee product behaves differently from everything else: it never appears on the Addons step as something to choose, it is added to every basket automatically, and the delete button on its basket line is not shown. Clearing the basket does not clear it. The customer simply sees a priced line they cannot remove — there is no "mandatory" or "included" badge next to it, so name it clearly.
Note that an Insurance product has no image and no Number of units — it is a charge, not a thing you hold in stock.
Deciding which type to use
| You want | Use |
|---|---|
| A physical extra with limited stock, priced per day | Rental Accessory |
| An optional extra the customer can decline | Rental Accessory, or an Insurance without Forcing fee |
| A one-off fee for the whole booking | Insurance with Same price no matter how many days |
| A fee the customer cannot remove | Insurance with Forcing fee |
| A fee that scales with how many items are rented | Insurance with Price applies for each item in the booking* |
If an accessory does not show up
- Is it on the same location as the rental the customer is booking? Accessories are per location.
- Does Number of units show more than 0 for those dates? An accessory has stock exactly like a rental product — availability is stock minus what is booked, and one already out on a booking is not offered again for the same period.
- Are both prices set — check the Low Season tab as well if you untick Same price for high and low season?
- Is the customer getting past the Addons step at all? Adding the first accessory to a location is what makes the step appear.
- Is the name filled in for the language the customer is browsing in?
