The link in the confirmation email opens my front page instead of the codes

5 min read

Your customer clicks Start booking (or End booking, Prolong booking or Move start time) in their confirmation email and ends up on your website's front page, or on a "page not found" error, instead of on their booking with their PIN code.

The link itself is fine. What is wrong is the address it is pointing at. If a customer is waiting, skip straight to The fastest check below — the two sections after it explain why old links and QR codes are affected too.

The link in the email does not contain your website address. It is a short, permanent link that looks up the location when the customer clicks it, and then forwards them to the booking page you saved for that location, with the booking added to the address.

That means two things:

  • If the saved address is wrong, every link forwards to the wrong place — including links in emails you sent weeks ago.
  • If you correct the address, those same old links start working again the next time someone clicks them. You do not need to resend anything.

The fastest check

  1. Go to Locations.
  2. Look at the Book button URL column. It shows whether the setup for that location is complete.
  3. Open the location. If the Book button tab has a warning icon on it, that is your problem.

Fix the address

  1. Go to Locations and open the location.
  2. Open the Book button tab.
  3. Under Where do customers book?, check which option is selected:
    • Rentalbuddy website — customers book on a page we host for you. The address comes from URL slug, not from the field below. Skip to the section on QR codes.
    • Booking link — customers follow a link to your Rentalbuddy page.
    • Embedded on your website — customers book on your own website. This is the option that uses the field below.
  4. For Embedded on your website, find URL where book button is implemented.
  5. Enter the address of the exact page on your site where your booking button sits. The helper text says it plainly: "Enter the web address of the page where your button should appear, for example https://yoursite.com/booking. Do not include anything after a ?."
  6. Press Save.

If your booking button is on your Rentalbuddy page rather than your own site, the Use Rentalbuddy URL button fills the field in for you.

What the address must contain

  • The full address, starting with https:// or http://. Typing yoursite.com/booking is rejected with "The URL must start with https:// or http://." Use https://yoursite.com/booking.
  • The page with the booking button on it — not your front page, unless the button really is on your front page. If the address points at a page with no booking button, the customer lands there and nothing happens. That is the classic "it goes to my front page" report.
  • No question mark. If you pasted a preview or test link, everything from the ? onward has to go. The admin warns: "Your page address should not contain a ? (this often happens if you pasted a preview or test link)."

Things that do not matter: a trailing slash at the end is removed automatically, and HTTPS:// is accepted and tidied up.

Everything else must match your real page exactly — spelling, and upper/lower case in the page path. https://yoursite.com/Booking and https://yoursite.com/booking are not necessarily the same page.

Common mistakes

  • The page was renamed or deleted. A page you removed during a website redesign leaves the saved address pointing at nothing, and customers get a 404. Open your own website, go to the booking page, and copy the address out of the browser's address bar.
  • The address is empty. With nothing saved, the link has nowhere to forward the customer, and they get a "not found" page. The field shows "Required for embedded booking."
  • You previewed but never saved. The preview button uses whatever is currently typed in the field. The admin warns about this: "This preview uses the website address above. Save your location to store that address." A preview that works proves nothing until you press Save.
  • You fixed the wrong location. This setting is per location. With several locations it is easy to correct one and test another.
  • The booking script is missing from that page. If the address is right but the page still does nothing, the problem is the embed, not this field. See the setup steps on the Book button tab — the full checklist is in Install the booking button on your website.

Because each link looks up this address at the moment it is clicked, changing it changes where all outstanding confirmation emails send people — including customers who are mid-rental right now.

That is usually what you want. But it also means a typo here takes down every active booking's link at once, not just future ones. So:

  • Change it outside your busiest hours if you can.
  • Immediately afterwards, open a real confirmation email (or use the preview on the Book button tab) and click the link to confirm it lands on the booking page.
  • Do not change it "to see what happens" mid-season.

QR codes landing on the wrong page

QR codes on your locks and stations resolve through the same location setting, so fixing the address above fixes them too — as long as the code was generated recently.

Older QR codes had the website address printed into the code itself. Those keep pointing at the old address no matter what you save now.

So, after you change the address:

  1. Go to Stations and open the station.
  2. Download the QR code for each lock again.
  3. Compare it with the sticker on the lock. If you cannot tell, reprint — it is cheaper than a customer standing at a locked box.
  4. Scan one with your phone to confirm it opens the booking page and not your front page.

The same applies to booking QR codes you generated from the Book button tab for posters or flyers.

If none of this helped

Contact support. Please include:

  • the location name,
  • the address you have saved in URL where book button is implemented,
  • one real link from a confirmation email (copy it from the email — do not retype it),
  • and where it actually took you.
